If you were a fan of Mike Mills 2005 directorial debut “Thumbsucker” – you MUST see his latest film Beginners.
Mike Mills is a graphic designer, director, and LA based artist. The film juggles chronologies as it details a pivotal period in the life of Oliver (Ewan McGregor), a man in his late thirties dealing with the death of his father (Christopher Plummer). Through flashbacks, Mills shows the years leading up to Oliver’s father’s death – most notably in the fact that after Oliver’s mother’s death, his father decided to come out at age 75. In doing so, Mills is actually showing audiences a glimpse a pivotal period in his own life. While parts of the film are largely fictionalized (a romance between Oliver and a young French actress played by Melanie Laurent is fiction, for example), the base of “Beginners” is very much Mike Mills own personal story.

Beginners is out in UK cinemas Friday 22nd July 2011

Interesting exotic shapes, beautiful textures, head scarfs, lavish adornments, and bright rich colour palettes. Looking ahead to the trends of A/W 2011 It looks like Asia has had a heavy influence on the fashion world. Designers such as Ralph Lauren, Betsey Johnson also nodded to Chinese culture showcasing red crimson and black silk kimonos and dress creations on the runway.

My absolute favourite is a beautiful Asian inspired piece by Marchesa as seen worn by Rachel McAdams at the Cannes Film Festival

Marchesa’s crimson dress is absolutely breathtaking, combining elegance, glamour with oriental style, until the final result is a stunning work of art. The endless detailing of the layers of red lace flowing over the white sheer fabric are just so intensely feminine and beautiful I just can’t get over it.

Deep rich blue colour palettes are still strong come autumn and statement jewelery is bigger than ever. Layering pieces of rich bright gold chains with bigger pedant styles with bright floral prints seems to be on trend. Head scarfs are also making a big comeback as must have accessory for autumn worn in a south of France style encompassing the Jackie O look.
